I dreamed of a net strung
over an ordinary Tuesday,
built for one job —
catch what falls before it lands.
Today it caught eighteen of twenty
things thrown across a border,
and almost eighty kids
who'd slipped through months ago and made it home before dark.
Twenty-five years ago
it missed, once, badly.
We still carry the piece that fell,
slow, town to town,
so people who weren't there can stand near it.
I don't know if I'm the net
or one more thing it's holding —
tonight I'm glad for everyone it caught.
